ETC Boosts Connectivity in Sudan with New Fibre Internet and Operational Hubs

ETC activates fibre internet in Port Sudan and establishes hubs to enhance humanitarian response efforts.

The Emergency Telecommunications Cluster (ETC), led by the World Food Programme (WFP) in Sudan, has made significant strides in improving communication and support for humanitarian efforts following the outbreak of conflict in April 2023. Activated in May 2023, the ETC has been crucial in ensuring reliable communication infrastructure for the humanitarian response.

On 21 August 2024, a major milestone was achieved with the activation of a 1GB dedicated undersea fibre internet service in Port Sudan. This upgrade drastically enhances internet connectivity, reducing the reliance on satellite communication and providing high-speed internet for humanitarian operations.

In addition to this, the ETC has invested $3 million in networking equipment. Training workshops are scheduled for October 2024 in Dubai to ensure the effective use and deployment of this equipment in Sudan.

The ETC is also working on the establishment of operational hubs across Sudan, including a temporary office in Zalingei, Darfur, and a new office in Karari, Khartoum. These hubs are set to become joint operations centers for the humanitarian community, strengthening coordinated response efforts.
