Malawi and China Strengthen Strategic Partnership Ahead of 17th Diplomatic Anniversary

Malawi’s President Chakwera seeks infrastructure collaboration with China, focusing on modernization and regional connectivity.

Malawi’s President Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera recently shared insights from his bilateral discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping during the Summit of the Forum on China–Africa Cooperation (FOCAC). This meeting marks a continued effort to strengthen Malawi’s economic ties with China, following previous discussions in 2021 and 2022.

President Chakwera emphasized the need for swift implementation of initiatives related to economic production, modernization, industrialization, and infrastructure development. He highlighted the potential of Malawi-China bilateral relations, which are set to be elevated to a strategic partnership as they approach the 17th anniversary of diplomatic ties.

Malawi anticipates shared prosperity through the Belt and Road Initiative, a global infrastructure project that could significantly impact the Global South. When integrated into the African Continental Free Trade Area framework, it promises substantial economic benefits.

President Chakwera also presented several infrastructure projects to President Xi for consideration under the Belt and Road Initiative. These projects include the improvement of the Rumphi-Nyika-Chitipa-Ilomba Road and the expansion of railway lines, which are crucial for boosting connectivity between Malawi, Zambia, and Tanzania.

In response, President Xi Jinping pledged to make the FOCAC summit a memorable and fruitful event for Malawi, ushering in a new era of sustainable development as the two countries look forward to deepened cooperation.
