First PoC of a 5G Smart Port Demonstrated by Omantel, Huawei, and Hutchison Ports Sohar

Months after signing a Memorandum of Agreement, Omantel, Hutchison Ports Sohar, and Huawei have demonstrated the first Proof of Concept (PoC) of a 5G smart port in the Middle East. The General Manager of ICT Business Division at Omantel, Osama Zarzour took to LinkedIn to announce the feat.

“In line with the MoU signed on March 10, 2021, Omantel along with Hutchison Ports Sohar and Huawei launched under the patronage of His Excellency Ali Al Shidhani, PhD of Communications at Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology the first 5G smart port PoC demonstration to showcase the result of first stage, aiming to provide highly reliable communication services and improve operational efficiency, accuracy, time management, and security, among other services. This is the first POC of 5G surveillance with AI in the Middle East.”

This particular Proof of Concept has involved the utilization of 5G in the port operations for the promotion of more efficiency and better security.
