MTN Group achieved validation from the independent Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction targets across the organization. This recognition signifies MTN’s dedication to addressing climate change and marks a significant milestone in its sustainability journey. The SBTi classified MTN’s scope 1 and 2 target ambition as aligned with climate science, following a trajectory aimed at limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

As part of its commitment, MTN aims to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 50% by 2030, based on a 2021 baseline. Additionally, the company has pledged to decrease absolute scope 3 GHG emissions resulting from fuel and energy-related activities by 50% by 2030, also based on a 2021 baseline. Nompilo Morafo, MTN Group’s Chief Sustainability and Corporate Affairs Officer, emphasized the significance of these targets in their efforts to combat climate change.

MTN Group is actively collaborating with its suppliers to drive sustainability. By 2026, the company aims to ensure that 80% of its suppliers, based on spending, have science-based targets. This approach demonstrates MTN’s recognition of the crucial role businesses play in addressing climate change and aligning their actions with scientific principles.

Nompilo Morafo further expressed the company’s satisfaction in joining the ranks of over 5,200 companies and financial institutions working with the SBTi to achieve rapid emissions reductions. MTN’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and collaborating with suppliers in setting science-based targets reflects its determination to make a positive impact in the fight against climate change.
