Bayobab, an MTN Group subsidiary, has extended its fibre network by 3,000 km, reaching a total of 108,000 km of proprietary fibre. The company also secured a National Long-Distance Operator license in Nigeria, enabling it to handle long-distance traffic within the nation.

CEO Ralph Mupita stated that Bayobab’s external revenue surged by 12.3% to $172.5 million in H1 2023. The communication platforms segment grew by 11.9% with a five-year messaging contract and solid international voice services performance.

Mupita highlighted Bayobab’s collaboration with global mobile networks, resulting in over 5,700 roaming services launched and an expanded footprint. The fixed connectivity sector drove external revenue up by 15.2%, aided by new infrastructure contracts valued at $8.4 million.

Bayobab’s expansion across Africa continues with the $320 million Project East2West agreement alongside infrastructure investment firm Africa50. This initiative aims to connect ten African countries through a terrestrial fibre optic cable network by 2025, reinforcing Africa’s connectivity through strategic partnerships.

Bayobab CEO Frédéric Schepens emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts in meeting the growing demand for digital services in Africa’s evolving landscape.
