The National Communications Authority (NCA) of the Republic of South Sudan has announced a significant partnership with Starlink, the global satellite internet provider, to introduce affordable and accessible internet services across the nation. This collaboration aligns with the NCA’s mandate to regulate the telecommunications and ICT sectors and ensure equitable access to cost-effective communication services for all South Sudanese citizens.
Key Details of the Partnership
The NCA, established by the National Communication Act of 2012, has been in negotiations with Starlink to bring its advanced satellite internet services to South Sudan. The partnership aims to provide the public with affordable connectivity options, facilitating greater access to the internet, which is critical for socio-economic development in the country.
As part of the agreement, Starlink has been granted a provisional license to operate in South Sudan. Customers will need to register and make payments in South Sudanese pounds, equivalent to the US dollar prices set with Starlink. This ensures transparency and affordability in the pricing of Starlink services.
Approved Tariffs and Local Distribution
In compliance with the National Communication Act and the National Communications Tariffs Regulations of 2016, Starlink has submitted its tariff proposals, which have been officially approved by the NCA. The approved tariffs, excluding applicable taxes and statutory fees, are now available to the public.
Starlink will soon select local distributors to manage the distribution of its services and equipment within the country. The NCA advises individuals and entities to refrain from importing Starlink or any other telecommunication equipment through unauthorized distributors, as doing so would violate sections 97 and 98 of the National Communication Act of 2012.
