U.S. and Nigeria Strengthen Collaboration to Boost Digital Economy and Innovation

The United States Department of Commerce and the Nigerian Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy have announced a strengthened collaboration aimed at advancing the digital economy. This initiative is a crucial component of the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that established the U.S.-Nigeria Commercial and Investment Partnership. The MOU was signed by U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo and Nigeria’s Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry, Dr. Doris Nkiruka Uzoka-Anite, and marks a significant step towards enhanced digital cooperation between the two nations.

This announcement follows the visit of Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Global Markets, Arun Venkataraman, to Nigeria. During his visit, he engaged with Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Olatunbosun Tijani, to discuss mutual priorities for fostering innovation and expanding digital trade and investment.

Both Secretary Raimondo and Minister Tijani emphasized the transformative potential of the digital economy in driving economic growth, job creation, and fostering an inclusive and sustainable digital future. They highlighted the importance of artificial intelligence (AI) in shaping the future of various sectors and stressed the need for responsible AI governance and the implementation of secure and trustworthy AI systems.

A key focus of this partnership is on data protection and the facilitation of cross-border data transfers, recognizing the critical role of data in driving innovation. Both parties agreed to promote robust data protection frameworks and enhance cooperation on cloud security to safeguard data and mitigate cybersecurity risks.

The collaboration also aims to address the growing need for digital skills and literacy. Both the U.S. and Nigeria are committed to investing in the digital capacity of their workforce, particularly focusing on youth, women, and underrepresented communities. Initiatives such as the United States Digital Transformation with Africa and Nigeria’s Strategic Plan for the Digital Economy Sector are aligned in their objective to empower individuals with essential digital skills.

Moreover, the partnership seeks to explore opportunities for joint research and development in AI and the establishment of international standards. The U.S. and Nigeria intend to cooperate in key sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, transportation, and healthcare, leveraging AI to meet shared economic needs.

Through this collaboration, the U.S. Department of Commerce and the Nigerian Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy aim to build a more connected and innovative digital landscape, driving economic growth and fostering a sustainable digital future for both nations.
