Telecom Regulator Seeks Public Input on Future Spectrum Use for IMT and Satellite IoT Systems

August 12, 2024

Author: Aayushya Ranjan

The national telecom regulator of Oman has initiated a public consultation on the future use of the 1980-2010 MHz and 2170-2200 MHz frequency bands, aimed at optimizing spectrum resources to support the evolution of International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT) systems, including satellite Internet of Things (IoT) services.

As the digital landscape continues to evolve, the demand for radio spectrum to accommodate emerging communication technologies and services is surging. In response, the regulator is reviewing the current and potential future uses of the specified frequency bands. The primary objectives of this project are to ensure efficient management of natural and national resources, foster a regulatory environment conducive to investment, and stimulate innovation in communications technologies.

The project focuses on two main areas: aligning with the rapid advancements in radio communications technology and enhancing the quality of telecommunications services offered to the public. By doing so, the Authority aims to create a flexible and investment-friendly environment that encourages the development of innovative technologies and services.

Stakeholders and the public are invited to submit their responses and opinions on the public consultation document before the deadline of July 25, 2024. The regulator will consider all feedback, though it reserves the right to determine which comments will be incorporated into the final decision-making process.
