UN-Led Initiative Leverages AI for Enhanced Global Disaster Management

August 21, 2024
1 min read
Author: Aayushya Ranjan

The Global Initiative on Resilience to Natural Hazards through AI Solutions, led by several UN agencies, is pioneering the integration of AI into disaster management. With participation from organizations like the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), UN Environment Programme (UNEP), and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the initiative seeks to enhance disaster preparedness, response, and recovery efforts through AI-driven innovations.

This group aims to leverage AI to better predict, respond to, and recover from natural disasters, laying the groundwork for future standardization in the field.

A collaborative resource on their website called the “Glossary on AI for Disaster Management,” provides essential definitions across AI, geoscience, and disaster management fields. This glossary will support policymakers, scientists, and practitioners in enhancing their disaster management efforts.
