Vodacom Seeks Constitutional Court’s Review of “Please Call Me” Compensation Ruling

Author: Aayushya Ranjan

South Africa’s Constitutional Court will consider Vodacom Group Ltd.’s application for leave to appeal a ruling requiring compensation to Kenneth Makate, a former employee. The court’s directive comes in response to Vodacom’s challenge of a prior decision in the “Please Call Me” case, which entitles Makate to compensation estimated between 29 billion rand ($1.64 billion) and 63 billion rand.

The compensation stems from Makate’s proposal of the “Please Call Me” concept over two decades ago. Vodacom aims to contest the ruling in hopes of overturning or revising the compensation amount set by the earlier judgment. The Constitutional Court’s upcoming review will be pivotal in determining the final outcome of this high-profile legal battle.
