NamPower and KfW Sign N$1.3 Billion Loan for 100 MW Solar Plant in Namibia
NamPower and the German Development Cooperation, through the KfW Development Bank signed a loan agreement of N$1,3 billion for the construction of a 100 MW solar power plant.
The Rosh Pinah 100 MW PV Project will be erected close to the town of Rosh Pinah town in southern Namibia, harnessing the excellent conditions for solar energy power generation in the area. The site lies near the existing Namibian power grid and will thus avoid additional investment costs for new transmission or other enabling infrastructure.
The loan will cover almost 80% of the total cost of the project, while NamPower is funding the remaining 20% from its balance sheet.
It’s a collaboration for sustainability, progress, and environmental stewardship. Together, we are making a statement that economic growth and environmental responsibility are not mutually exclusive – they are, in fact, complementary. Indeed, NamPower is pleased to enter into the financing agreement with KfW, and we look forward to a fruitful and mutually beneficial relationship for the both of us.
Mr Kahenge Haulofu, Managing Director, NamPower
The 20% own contribution together with the KfW concessional loan has enabled the PV project to be extended from 70 MW to 100 MW.
Ms. Beatrice Lucke, Country Director, KfW Development Bank
Once operational, the facility will contribute to energy security and help diversify the energy mix in Namibia, while setting an example for future projects, proving that large-scale renewable energy is both viable and essential.
