Safaricom Commits KES 104 Billion to Transform Kenya’s Healthcare with Integrated IT System

Safaricom has announced a major investment of KES 104,808,136,478 to implement an Integrated Healthcare Information Technology System (IHTS) in partnership with Apeiro Limited and Konvergenz Network Solutions Limited. This initiative aims to ensure every Kenyan has access to quality healthcare while allowing the Ministry of Health to deploy the system without upfront costs.

Key components of the IHTS include a Health Information Exchange (HIE) to unify patient records, a Standard Based Integrated Hospital Management Information System (IHMIS) for public health facilities, and digitization of health product supply chains. The project will also enhance health insurance systems and provide a Kenyan-hosted health cloud along with robust cybersecurity measures to protect patient data.

In addition to technology development, Safaricom will support the training of public health professionals to facilitate the rollout of these systems. Peter Ndegwa, CEO of Safaricom, highlighted this investment as a crucial step in advancing the company’s mission to use technology for empowerment and to improve healthcare outcomes in Kenya.
