Zambia’s Cybersecurity Progress Recognized with 92.6% Global Cybersecurity Index Score
Zambia has made significant strides in its cybersecurity efforts, achieving an impressive 92.6% in the Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI) 2023, up from 68.8% in 2020. This remarkable growth underscores the nation’s commitment to strengthening its digital infrastructure, protecting its critical information, and safeguarding citizens from cyber threats.
The GCI, developed by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), evaluates countries’ cybersecurity development across five pillars: legal measures, technical measures, organizational measures, capacity building, and international cooperation. Zambia’s steady improvement from a score of just 14.7% in 2014 reflects the government’s strategic focus on enhancing cybersecurity policies, regulations, and institutions. These advancements are integral to Zambia’s efforts to position itself as a leader in cybersecurity in Africa.
A major contributor to Zambia’s success has been its robust legal framework, including comprehensive laws on data protection and cybersecurity, which ensure a secure digital environment for businesses and citizens alike. The government has also made organizational strides by implementing a National Cybersecurity Strategy and establishing key institutions, such as the Computer Incident Response Team (CIRT), to monitor and mitigate cyber threats.
International collaboration has been a cornerstone of Zambia’s cybersecurity journey. By participating in multilateral agreements and strengthening international partnerships, the country has enhanced its information-sharing capabilities and cross-border security measures.
Capacity building has played a crucial role in Zambia’s cybersecurity development. Through ongoing training programs and initiatives aimed at raising awareness among the public, youth, and professionals, the country is fostering a more informed and prepared population capable of dealing with cyber risks.
Looking ahead, the Zambian government aims to further bolster its cybersecurity framework through increased public-private partnerships, continued education and skill-building initiatives, and deeper international cooperation. These efforts will help ensure that Zambia remains at the forefront of cybersecurity advancements, providing a secure digital ecosystem that supports the nation’s economic growth, innovation, and the protection of its citizens.
With this remarkable achievement, Zambia is positioned as one of Africa’s cybersecurity leaders, committed to creating a safer, more connected future.
