DigiKen Launches to Drive Digital Inclusion and Economic Growth in Kenya
DigiKen is empowering Kenyans to participate fully in the digital economy and unlock immense potential of digital platforms.
Speaking during the official launch of DigiKen, a joint United Nations (UN) and European Union (EU) programme that leverages multi-stakeholder partnerships to foster a thriving digital ecosystem, the Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy, Dr. Margaret Ndung’u said that through the programme, Kenya is empowered to take deliberate steps to close the digital divide.
In today’s world, access to digital platforms is no longer a luxury, but a necessity. From education and healthcare to economic opportunities and civic engagement, digital inclusion is central to how we live, work, and participate in society.

CS Ndung’u noted that DigiKen aligns with Kenya Vision 2030, aiming to build a vibrant digital platform ecosystem that supports Kenya’s journey to becoming an industrialized, middle-income country. Further stating that the programme’s objectives directly contributes to the Kenya Digital Masterplan – 2022-2032, pillars: innovation, digital governance, skills, and infrastructure, while also addressing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
In his remarks, the Principal Secretary, ICT and the Digital Economy, Eng. John Tanui appreciated the efforts by UN agencies and the EU in supporting the Government’s Agenda majorly in enhancing connectivity.
The PS observed that DigiKen will play a key role in growing and accelerating MSMEs, skilling of public servants and ensuring good adoption of digital platforms in the country.
On her part, The EU Ambassador to Kenya, H.E. Henriette Geiger, remarked that DigiKen unites the strength of UN and EU members to support the growth of Kenya’s digital platform economy.
She emphasized Digiken’s focus on enabling the growth of homegrown digital platforms and creating opportunities for Kenya’s youth by laying the groundwork for a vibrant and resilient digital economy.
The United Nations Resident Coordinator in Kenya Dr. Stephen Jackson highlighted that Digiken will foster digital innovation hubs to deliver on a number of priorities which include digital media and information literacy, digital skills development, digital platform entrepreneurship and use of sustainable AI technology.
The meeting was attended by Ambassador of Spain in Kenya, H.E. Christina Diaz, representatives of UN Agencies and key officials.
