Ghana Launches ECOWAS Free Roaming Initiative with Togo and Benin
The Deputy Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, Hon. Charles Acheampong, officially launched the ECOWAS Free Roaming initiative on October 9, 2024, at the NCA Tower. This initiative establishes free mobile connectivity between Ghana and its neighboring countries, Togo and Benin, following the successful implementation of a similar initiative with Côte d’Ivoire.
In his address, Hon. Acheampong emphasized that this initiative signifies a new chapter in regional collaboration, allowing citizens to communicate without the burden of international roaming charges or the need for multiple SIM cards. He highlighted that it will eliminate additional fees for the first 30 consecutive days of travel, promoting increased mobility and regional integration.
The Deputy Minister urged the National Communications Authority (NCA) to develop clear metrics to evaluate the initiative’s success, ensuring that promises made to citizens are fulfilled. Dr. Joe Anokye, Director General of the NCA, remarked that the initiative is a testament to the commitment to closer ties among West African nations and recognized the efforts of the Implementation Committees from Ghana, Benin, and Togo in bringing this vision to fruition.
The ECOWAS Free Roaming initiative is poised to enhance connectivity, strengthen regional partnerships, and facilitate economic growth across West Africa.
