Airtel Malawi Plc has announced the departure of its long-serving Managing Director, Mr. Charles Kamoto, who will transition to a new role as Managing Director of Airtel Tanzania Plc, effective November 1, 2024. Mr. Kamoto, who joined Airtel Malawi as Chief Commercial Officer in 2014 and became Managing Director in 2016, has played a pivotal role in driving the company’s growth. His leadership saw the successful listing of Airtel Malawi on the Malawi Stock Exchange in 2020 and the significant increase in both customer market share and revenue market share, boosting shareholder value. He is also credited with building a resilient business foundation and assembling a strong, multidisciplinary team that has positioned Airtel Malawi for future success.

As Mr. Kamoto moves to his new role, the board of Airtel Malawi expressed their deep gratitude for his dedication and leadership. Dr. Ngeyi Ruth Kanyongolo, Chairperson of the Airtel Malawi Board, highlighted that Mr. Kamoto’s legacy would continue to inspire the company as it moves forward.

In the interim, Airtel Malawi’s Finance Director, Mr. Abdul Khayyum Shaik, will take over as Acting Managing Director until a permanent successor is appointed. With over 20 years of experience in telecommunications finance, Mr. Shaik brings a wealth of expertise to the leadership role. He began his career at Bharti Airtel and has held senior finance positions in both India and Africa. His extensive experience in finance, coupled with his role in leading Airtel Malawi’s financial operations, makes him a fitting choice to ensure continuity and stability during this transition period.

The Airtel Malawi team remains committed to delivering exceptional service to its customers and partners, assuring stakeholders that the company is well-prepared for continued success under its robust leadership structure.

Airtel Malawi Plc thanked Mr. Kamoto for his significant contributions and wishes him success in his new role, while expressing confidence in Mr. Shaik’s ability to guide the company forward during this interim phase.
