Zolana Joao Commits to Expanding Satellite Connectivity as ITSO’s New Vice Chair for Africa

Zolana Joao has been elected Vice Chair for Region D at ITSO, committing to expanding satellite connectivity for underserved Africans.

Zolana Joao, D.Eng, has been elected Vice Chair for Region D (Africa) at the 41st ITSO Assembly in Washington, DC. Expressing his gratitude to the 45 delegates who entrusted him with the position, Joao also extended special thanks to George Ah-Thew of the SADC ICT Secretariat and ATU General Secretary, John Omo.

In his remarks, Joao emphasized the importance of safeguarding Africa’s orbital slots and frequencies. He highlighted the need to ensure that more than 60% of Africans, who currently lack internet access, can benefit from satellite communications. His vision is to make connectivity accessible to all on a nondiscriminatory basis, strengthening Africa’s digital infrastructure.

Joao also acknowledged the contributions of outgoing Director General Patrick Masambu and extended congratulations to the newly elected ITSO Director General, Dr. Renata Brazil David. He expressed optimism about working together to build a stronger ITSO that aligns with the goals of the African continent.
