SABC Reports R35 Million in Unpaid TV Licence Fees Owed by Government Departments

October 22, 2024

Author: Aayushya Ranjan

The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has disclosed that various government departments owe nearly R35 million in unpaid TV licence fees. This significant debt was revealed in a recent report by City Press, which highlighted that the outstanding fees are linked to 2,490 television sets owned by different departments.

The SABC has been grappling with increasing TV licence non-compliance, with avoidance rates escalating to 86% during the 2023/24 financial year. This widespread failure to settle TV licence fees is contributing to the financial challenges faced by the public broadcaster, as it relies heavily on this revenue stream to fund its operations.
