M-KOPA Empowers Kenya with 1.5 Million Locally Assembled Smartphones
M-KOPA Kenya; a subsidiary of the leading Pan-African fintech, UK-based M-KOPA, today presented key findings from its annual Impact Report, Pathways to Progress at a media roundtable in Nairobi.Highlighting its substantial contribution to Kenya’s economy, the report reveals that out of the Group’s five markets and 5 million customers reached across Africa, M-KOPA has made its greatest impact in Kenya. Reaching over 3million customers, creating more than 16,000 jobs, and contributing KES 17,2billion in direct and indirect taxes since inception.
M-KOPA Kenya has established itself as a critical player in the Kenyan economy, enabling financial inclusion through affordable access to smartphones, digital loans, data, free hospital cover (in partnership withTURACO) and financing for e-motorbikes in Kenya.

M-KOPA has made a substantial impact in Kenya, reaching over 3 million customers through its expansive distribution network and creating employment for 16,000 Kenyans. This includes 1,600 full-time employees across the country, with 325 new roles added since 2023 at its local smartphone assembly plant, where job opportunities primarily support youth and first-time job seekers. Over 1.5 million smartphones produced through the local assembly factory with a target of 10 million locally produced and sold affordable smartphones by 2027.
As a major taxpayer, M-KOPA has contributed more than KES 17.2 billion to the Kenya Revenue Authority since its inception, covering various tax categories. In innovation, M-KOPA launched its first locally produced smartphone, the M-KOPA X20, which includes embedded digital financial services that enhance its utility beyond standard smartphone functions. Over 1.5 million smartphones have been assembled locally, with a target of 10 million affordable devices produced and sold by 2027.
Since 2020, M-KOPA has sold 3.3 million smartphones in Kenya and financed over 1,500 e-motorbikes, supporting drivers’ incomes while contributing to carbon emission reductions.
