South Africa's Communications Minister, Solly Malatsi explores reducing smartphone taxes to increase affordability as the country prepares for a 2G and 3G network phase-out, promoting digital access.

South Africa’s Communications Minister, Solly Malatsi, has announced preliminary discussions with the Treasury to explore reducing taxes on smartphones. This move aims to make smartphones more affordable for the public as the country readies itself for the phase-out of outdated 2G and 3G networks.

Speaking with Reuters  on the sidelines of the Africa Tech conference, Malatsi emphasized that early responses from the Treasury have been encouraging. Lowering smartphone costs is viewed as essential for expanding digital access, especially as the nation prepares for widespread adoption of advanced network technologies.
