Telecom Namibia’s fiber expansion delivers high-speed internet to underserved areas, empowering sectors like healthcare, education, and agriculture, driving digital transformation and economic growth nationwide.

Telecom Namibia has announced the successful completion of 8 Fiber (FTTx) projects in 2023 and 2024. The goal is to modernize Namibia’s communication infrastructure, thereby replacing slow and outdated existing copper infrastructure that has been prone to copper theft and sabotage.

These projects, valued at approximately N$35.5 million, have resulted in the installation of 233,858 meters of fiber, enabling the connection of an additional 7,838 erven, particularly in traditionally underserved areas.

The company plans to further invest N$27 million in the 2024/25 financial year to expand its fiber network and enhance connectivity across the country. This significant investment underscores Telecom Namibia’s commitment to delivering high-speed, and reliable internet services to Namibian communities, thereby bridging the digital divide, particularly starting in traditionally underserved areas such as Katutura in Windhoek and Kuisebmond and Narraville in Walvis Bay and expanding countrywide.

Telecom Namibia’s expanding fiber network is poised to revolutionize various sectors of the Namibian economy. Enhanced connectivity will benefit tourism by attracting more visitors such as digital nomads, facilitate seamless communication between businesses and tourists. Industrial development will be accelerated through digital transformation and remote operations enabled by the high-speed fiber network. Small and medium-sized enterprises will be empowered, fostering entrepreneurship and economic growth. The healthcare sector will see improvements in telemedicine and remote healthcare services, bringing quality care to remote areas. Precision agriculture and remote monitoring will be advanced in the agricultural sector, leading to increased efficiency and productivity. Education will benefit from enhanced online learning and research capabilities, improving access to quality education. Finally, the real estate sector will experience stimulated growth and investment as fiber connectivity enhances property values and attracts businesses and residents.

These projects demonstrate the power of collaboration in delivering essential infrastructure improvements. We are confident that the fiber network will serve as a valuable asset to Namibia for years to come.

– Dr Stanley Shanapinda, CEO, Telecom Namibia

Telecom Namibia’s fiber network expansion has focused on several key regions:

  • Central-North Region – This region, with a high population density, has seen significant investment in Telecom Namibia’s fiber infrastructure. Projects have been completed in areas such as Okahandja, Windhoek North-East, Windhoek North-West, Windhoek Rural, Windhoek CBD, and Windhoek South.
  • Erongo Region – This region, particularly the coastal areas of Swakopmund and Walvis Bay, has benefited from fiber network expansion.
  • Far North Region – Projects in Ondangwa and Oshakati have enhanced connectivity in this region.
  • North-East Region – Areas such as Katima Mulilo, Otjiwarongo, Rundu, and Tsumeb have seen fiber network upgrades.
  • South Region – The town of Oranjemund has also benefited from fiber network expansion.

By investing in cutting-edge fiber technology, Telecom Namibia is positioning Namibia as a digitally advanced nation. This initiative will drive economic growth, create new opportunities, and improve the overall quality of life for all Namibians.
