Breaking Boundaries with Next-Generation Technology
Ciena is making waves in the submarine cable space with the launch of WaveLogic 6, their sixth-generation SLTE and modem technology. This groundbreaking solution delivers speeds of 1.6 terabits per second—a world first. Recently, Ciena successfully completed a transatlantic trial at 1.2 terabits per second on a commercial cable, solidifying their leadership in next-generation connectivity.
“It’s not just about capacity,” Thomas explained. “WaveLogic 6 reduces cost per bit, space per bit, and power consumption, addressing critical challenges in cable stations and data centers worldwide. The result is faster, more efficient networks that meet today’s demands while preparing for tomorrow’s.”
Leveraging AI and Emerging Technologies
When asked about the impact of AI on the industry, Thomas emphasized its dual role in generating network traffic and improving product development. While the full implications of AI on submarine systems are still emerging, Ciena is helping hyperscalers prepare for this transformation with their advanced modem technologies.
“AI is integral to everything we develop,” Thomas noted. “It’s transforming how we innovate and how we help our customers manage their networks.”
Addressing Africa’s Connectivity Challenges
Africa has seen a surge in submarine cable deployments in recent years, but Thomas highlighted the need for greater terrestrial connectivity to fully leverage this capacity. Reliable inland networks are critical to supporting Africa’s 38% annual data growth—the highest in the world.
“Africa’s young, rapidly growing population is driving unprecedented data demand,” Thomas said. “Our solutions focus on reducing power requirements and creating seamless end-to-end networks, connecting subsea cables directly to data centers for greater efficiency.”
Sustainability at the Core
Ciena is committed to sustainability, both as a company and through its product offerings. By developing low-power, cost-effective solutions, Ciena addresses the continent’s energy challenges while advancing connectivity.
“Sustainability is deeply embedded in our DNA,” Thomas stated. “We’re building networks that are not only faster and more efficient but also environmentally responsible.”
A Future of Growth and Collaboration
Looking ahead, Ciena sees Africa playing an increasingly pivotal role in global connectivity, with geopolitical shifts and advancements like multicore fiber driving new developments. The company is also strengthening its presence on the continent, hiring local talent and partnering with African companies to deliver tailored solutions.
“Local partnerships and having boots on the ground are crucial for us,” Thomas shared. “It’s how we ensure quality and better serve our customers in a market as diverse and dynamic as Africa.”
Ciena’s relentless innovation and dedication to collaboration are shaping the future of connectivity across Africa and beyond.
