South Africa Extends Analogue Switch-Off Deadline to March 2025, Prioritizing Digital Migration for All
South Africa extends analogue switch-off, prioritizes indigent households, accelerates digital migration amid costly project delays.
South Africa has extended the deadline for its analogue switch-off from December 31, 2024, to March 31, 2025. The Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies, Solly Malatsi, confirmed cabinet approval of the extension, emphasizing the importance of ensuring indigent households can access digital broadcast services. The decision addresses delays in the Broadcasting Digital Migration project, which has cost the government R1.23 billion due to dual illumination.
The extension provides additional time to distribute and install government-subsidized set-top boxes to approximately 467,000 registered households still awaiting the devices. Malatsi highlighted the urgency of accelerating this process to avoid further financial strain and ensure a smooth transition. Broadcasters and stakeholders are expected to play a crucial role in raising awareness and supporting the migration.
