Airtel Rwanda Launches Voice over 4G, Achieving Another Milestone in Connectivity Innovation

Airtel Rwanda has become the first telecom operator in the country to launch Voice over 4G (VoLTE) services, marking a significant leap in technological advancement. Within just one month of the launch, the service has garnered over one million users, with 30% of 3G voice traffic seamlessly transitioning to 4G, underscoring rapid adoption and customer satisfaction.

The development comes on the heels of Airtel Rwanda’s complete network upgrade to 4G by 2024, achieving 95% population coverage. This initiative, coupled with the introduction of unlimited call plans in 2023, has propelled smartphone penetration from a modest 10% to over 50%, ensuring broader access to high-speed connectivity across the nation.

Looking ahead, Airtel Rwanda plans to phase out 2G and 3G services by 2026, in alignment with Rwanda’s National Broadband Policy.
