Telecom Namibia Suffers Ransomware Attack, Sensitive Data Leaked
Telecom Namibia has fallen victim to a ransomware attack by hackers known as Hunters International, resulting in the leak of sensitive customer data, including personal and financial information of high-ranking government officials.
The hackers released the data after the company refused to pay a ransom, with nearly 500,000 records reportedly stolen and some shared on social media. Outgoing President Nangolo Mbumba condemned the attack, calling it a national security issue requiring urgent action.
CEO Stanley Shanapinda reaffirmed the company’s stance against negotiating with hackers, stating, “Paying a ransom offers no guarantee of confidentiality.” Telecom Namibia is investigating the breach and working with security officials to contain further exposure.
The company urged customers to update passwords, monitor financial accounts, and avoid circulating leaked data, warning that such actions are criminal offenses.
This incident underscores the growing threat of ransomware attacks and the need for stronger cybersecurity measures.
