Ericsson and Chunghwa Telecom’s 5G SA partnership enhances AI-driven, programmable networks, unlocking new digital services, revenue streams, and 6G potential.

Ericsson and Chunghwa Telecom have inked a 5G Advanced Cooperation Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at Mobile World Congress today, signaling a major step in advancing next-generation mobile technology. The collaboration aims to accelerate 5G Standalone (SA) adoption, unlock new revenue streams, and lay the groundwork for 6G evolution, reinforcing both companies’ leadership in the mobile industry.

This strategic agreement will focus on three key areas: accelerate 5G SA for differentiated connectivity, enabling high-performing, AI-native & programmable networks, and opening network APIs for new digital services. By investing in these innovations, Chunghwa Telecom and Ericsson aim to redefine consumer digital experiences, enterprise connectivity, and critical services.

Alex Chien, Chairman of Chunghwa Telecom emphasized the company’s position as a leader in 5G performance and innovation:

Chunghwa Telecom has consistently led in 5G user experience and remains the only operator in Taiwan to be recognized by both SPEEDTEST® and OPENSIGNAL. Our collaboration with Ericsson ensures we continue pushing the boundaries of 5G-Advanced to deliver superior service differentiation and user experiences.

– Alex Chien, Chairman, Chunghwa Telecom

To stay ahead in the digital era, communication service providers (CSPs) must move beyond data-based service model with best-effort quality, and build intelligent networks to enable differentiated connectivity. This partnership enables us to develop a high-performing, programmable network that adapts to diverse industry needs.

– Chafic Nassif, Senior Vice President and Head of Northeast Asia

Beyond improving network performance, this partnership is expected to drive new business opportunities in extended reality (XR), IoT, and intelligent and autonomous networks. Ericsson and Chunghwa will begin 5G SA pilot deployments in 2025, setting the stage for large-scale commercial rollouts and further industry transformation.

The MoU was signed by Chih-Hsiung Huang, Chief Technology Officer and Executive Vice President at Chunghwa Telecom and David Chou, President of Ericsson Taiwan, at the Mobile World Congress 2025.  Alex Chien, Chairman of Chunghwa Telecom, and Chafic Nassif, President of Northeast Asia and Senior Vice President of Ericsson, served as witnesses.
