Safaricom M-PESA Ethiopia Powers Healthcare with Digital Payments in Landmark Partnership
Safaricom M-PESA Ethiopia partners with key stakeholders to digitize healthcare payments, boosting financial inclusion, efficiency, and accessibility across Ethiopia.

Safaricom M-PESA ETHIOPIA, along with other Financial Service Providers, has partnered with Federal Ministry of Health Ethiopia to introduce a secure, efficient, and scalable digital payment system for the healthcare sector to enhance financial inclusion, streamline healthcare payments, and improve service delivery nationwide.
The partnership will integrate M-PESA’s digital payment solutions into health facilities, enabling cashless medical transactions, automating insurance payments, and ensuring timely salary disbursements for Health Extension Workers.
The pilot phase will be implemented in selected health facilities, supported by financial literacy training for healthcare workers and beneficiaries.
During the Signing ceremony, it was stated that this collaboration is part of a broader effort involving the National Bank of Ethiopia, Ministry of Finance, Ethiopia , Health Insurance Services, and the UNDP’s Better Than Cash Alliance.
Building on M-PESA’s proven track record in driving financial inclusion across Africa, this initiative aims to make healthcare more accessible and affordable for all Ethiopians. Together, we are taking a significant step toward a more inclusive, efficient, and transparent healthcare system.
This initiative is a meaningful contribution towards supporting Ethiopia’s broader digital transformation efforts. By working together with key partners, we hope to contribute to a more inclusive, efficient, and transparent healthcare system—one that serves all Ethiopians and aligns with the vision of Digital Ethiopia 2025.
