Nigeria’s Senate advances a bill requiring social media platforms to establish local offices, tightening regulations on global tech firms operating remotely.

The Nigerian Senate has advanced a bill seeking to amend the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023, requiring social media platforms to establish physical offices within the country, Punch has reported.

According to the report, the proposed legislation passed its second reading.

The report stated that during deliberations, Senator Ned Nwoko (Delta North) highlighted that despite significant user engagement, major platforms such as Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, WhatsApp, YouTube, TikTok, and Snapchat have yet to set up physical offices in Nigeria, unlike in other markets.
