Privacy First: NDPC Partners with DKIPPI to Boost Data Protection in Nigeria
NDPC signed an MoU with DKIPPI to enhance data privacy, strengthen compliance, and investigate alleged breaches involving TikTok and Truecaller.

The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Data and Knowledge Information Privacy Protection Initiative (DKIPPI).
The National Commissioner/CEO of the NDPC, Dr Vincent Olatunji, expressed his delight, stating that the MoU marks another historic milestone for the Commission. He acknowledged the President of DKIPPI, Mr Tokunbo Smith, as a strong pillar of support since the Commission’s inception, highlighting his contributions to the development of the Nigeria Data Protection Act, the Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan (SRAP), and the General Application and Implementation Directive (GAID).
Dr Olatunji emphasised that the MoU formalises the partnership between the NDPC and DKIPPI to promote awareness, enhance compliance, and strengthen privacy protection in Nigeria, among other objectives.
Mr Smith affirmed that DKIPPI is committed to supporting the Commission and is prepared to do even more than it has in the past. Given that data protection and privacy requires significant attention globally, he reiterated DKIPPI’s commitment to making a greater impact in the data protection and privacy ecosystem.
Recognising the challenges of leading a new and globally relevant discipline, Mr Smith presented Dr Olatunji with an award, naming him an Ambassador of the Data and Knowledge Information Privacy Protection Initiative.
Multiple reports have also confirmed that NDPC has launched an investigation into TikTok and Truecaller following allegations of data breaches.
