BongoHive and ICTAZ launch Zambia Developer Survey 2025 to guide tech policies, boost innovation, and accelerate digital economic growth.

The digital landscape of Zambia took a significant leap forward today as BongoHive , in collaboration with the ICT Association of Zambia  (ICTAZ), launched the “State of the Developer Ecosystem in Zambia Survey 2025.” This survey aims to capture the pulse of Zambia’s developer community and will serve as a guiding tool for shaping the future of Zambia’s technology sector.
The event, held at the vibrant BongoHive innovation hub, was graced by Hon. Felix Chipota Mutati , Zambia’s Minister of Technology and Science – Zambia , who delivered a powerful keynote on the country’s digital transformation agenda. The Minister underscored the importance of a robust developer ecosystem as a cornerstone for Zambia’s economic growth and technological innovation. He also highlighted the government’s ongoing commitment to digitizing key sectors, including health, education, and finance, to drive national development.

The findings of this survey will provide vital insights into Zambia’s developer ecosystem, enabling us to make informed decisions about future policies, skills development, and fostering opportunities within the tech community. By empowering our developers, we are laying the foundation for an inclusive, prosperous, and innovative Zambia.

– Hon. Felix Chipota Mutati , Zambia’s Minister of Technology and Science, Zambia

The event marked a pivotal moment for the tech community as it brought together developers, entrepreneurs, policymakers, and industry leaders in the shared mission of digital transformation.
Dr. Clement Sinyangwe, President of ICTAZ, also spoke passionately about the growing role of ICT in Zambia’s economic landscape, noting that the sector has seen significant growth in recent years. The ICT sector’s contribution to the national economy grew from 2.6% in 2023 to 2.9% in 2024, a testament to its resilience and potential. His remarks were delivered on his behalf by Vice President of ICTAZ, Dr. Sara Mbewe.

We are on the brink of something extraordinary. With the ongoing development of our digital infrastructure, public-private partnerships, and favorable policies, we believe Zambia’s ICT sector will soon surpass traditional economic pillars like mining and agriculture to become a major contributor to the national economy.

– Dr. Clement Sinyangwe, President, ICTAZ

A key feature of the event was the presentation by BongoHive Executive Director, Lukonga Lindunda, who unveiled a comprehensive strategic deck outlining the importance of the developer ecosystem and the potential for growth in Zambia’s tech sector. The deck emphasized critical areas such as skills development, community collaboration, and the support required to nurture a thriving entrepreneurial spirit among Zambian developers.
The survey, which will be accessible nationwide, will gather data on the state of Zambia’s developer community, including software developers, programmers, and coders, whether formally trained or self-taught. It can be accessed via the following link: https://bit.ly/zmdevelopersurvey2025 . This comprehensive survey is expected to pave the way for programs that support Zambia’s goal of becoming a hub for innovation in Africa.
In closing, both the Minister and ICTAZ expressed their confidence in the collaborative efforts between BongoHive and ICTAZ, which will continue to drive the digital transformation agenda forward. The insights gained from this survey will be pivotal in addressing gaps in Zambia’s digital ecosystem, promoting job creation, and boosting Zambia’s competitiveness on the global stage.
With these initiatives in place, Zambia is set to make great strides towards building a digital economy that not only meets the demands of the present but also positions the country as a leader in technological innovation across the continent.
