ITU: Africa’s Internet Usage Lags Behind Global Average

ITU's report reveals Africa's internet usage rate is just 38%, with high costs, poor infrastructure, and digital skills barriers.

The International Telecommunications Union (ITU ) has highlighted in its latest report that Africa has the world’s lowest internet usage rate, with only 38% of the population online in 2024. This figure is significantly lower than the global average of 68%.

The ITU attributes this digital divide to several factors, including the high cost of internet services, a lack of digital skills, and inadequate network infrastructure. These challenges are particularly pronounced in rural areas, where access to reliable internet remains limited.
