Namibia is accelerating its shift to Digital Legal Identity, aiming to improve services, tackle corruption, and lead Africa’s digital future.

The Minister of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security Hon. Lucia Iipumbu applauded  the Ministry and its stakeholders for planning the country’s transition to Digital Legal Identity — a move she explained will accelerate access to services, unlock new opportunities, address existing gaps, and serve as a powerful tool against corruption.
The Minister made these remarks during a briefing held today at the Ministry’s Head Office.

Let’s become champions of Digital Legal Identity in Africa, so others can learn from us.

– Hon. Lucia Iipumbu, Minister of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security, Republic of Namibia

Minister Iipumbu urged, calling on all stakeholders to commit to set timelines and practical goals to make digital identity a reality.
She emphasized that the adoption of Digital Legal Identity is crucial in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, where digitization is reshaping all sectors of society.
Minister Iipumbu also underscored the importance of creating public awareness on the initiative prior to its implementation, to ensure that citizens welcome and embrace the change.
The Minister’s briefing featured presentations from various stakeholders, including the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology, the Office of the Prime Minister, the Bank of Namibia, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and private sector institutions. These presentations aimed to update the newly appointed Minister on the progress and implementation plans for the country’s Digital Legal Identity.
Namibia is preparing to transition to a digital identity system, where citizens will use electronic IDs to securely and efficiently access services.
