Liberia Launches Nationwide Repairs to Revive Rural Mobile Networks

May 6, 2025

Liberia begins restoring inactive rural telephony sites to reconnect underserved areas, reinforcing national efforts toward inclusive digital connectivity and access.

The Universal Access Fund (UAF), in partnership with the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications and the Liberia Telecommunications Authority, will begin a nationwide maintenance and restoration of rural telephony base stations on May 5, 2025. An assessment in March revealed that nine out of twelve supported sites in remote areas have been inactive for up to two years, affecting thousands who lack basic mobile connectivity.
A multi-stakeholder team, including government officials, telecom technicians, and engineers, will carry out phased repairs, starting with communities in Bomi, Gbarpolu, and Grand Cape Mount counties.
The initiative aims to re-establish voice and data services in underserved areas, reinforcing the government’s commitment to digital inclusion and improved connectivity for all Liberians. Further updates will be provided as the project progresses.
