Fibre cuts, vandalism, and power outages caused over 30 telecom disruptions across Nigeria in May, impacting voice, data, and USSD.

Nigeria’s telecommunications sector faced over 30 network disruptions in May 2025, primarily due to fibre cuts, power outages, vandalism, and infrastructure theft, according to the NCC Major Outage Reporting Portal . Leading operators—MTN , Glo , Airtel , and 9Mobile —experienced service interruptions that affected millions of users across multiple states.

Among the most significant events:

  • On May 21, Glo services were disrupted for over 8 hours in five states due to equipment theft.

  • MTN and Airtel were affected by widespread fibre cuts and power outages, including key regions in Cross River, Lagos, Benue, and Rivers.

  • 9Mobile faced multiple prolonged outages, notably a 15-day power disruption from April 29 to May 14 across parts of Kebbi and Sokoto.

These incidents highlight ongoing infrastructure challenges and the urgent need for reinforced security and coordination with civil agencies to maintain reliable telecom services.
