Smart Africa and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH have signed a Strategic Cooperation Framework on Digital Health, marking a significant milestone in efforts to strengthen health data systems across the continent.
The agreement sets the foundation for the development of a secure, ethical, and value-driven ecosystem for health data exchange among African countries, aligned with international standards. The collaboration supports the creation of the African Health Data Space—a vision for seamless, secure, and purposeful health data flow across borders and sectors to improve healthcare outcomes for all African citizens.
This strategic cooperation aims to drive innovation in digital health, enhance data interoperability, and foster responsible governance frameworks that ensure the protection and ethical use of personal health information.
“Today is more than just the signing of a document — it is the beginning of something transformational. Through this partnership, we are laying the foundation for the African Health Data Space: a future where health data flows securely, ethically, and with purpose, across borders, across sectors, and for the benefit of every African citizen.”
