R1.5 Billion Set Aside to Strengthen Gauteng’s Provincial ICT Network

MEC for Gauteng Treasury, Lebogang Maile, has allocated R1.5 billion to the Department of e-Government for the 2025/2026 financial year, and R4.8 billion over the MTEF, with a total of R4.8 billion committed over the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF).
This funding will support the Gauteng Provincial Network, which is responsible for providing and maintaining ICT and network infrastructure across the province. A key focus of the investment is the continued expansion of public Wi-Fi hotspots in all townships—an initiative aimed at improving living conditions in townships, informal settlements, and hostels.
In addition to digital access, the department will also intensify efforts to install more Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras in township areas. The move is intended to strengthen the fight against crime, corruption, vandalism, and general lawlessness.
This allocation signals the provincial government’s ongoing commitment to leveraging technology to enhance service delivery and promote safer, better-connected communities.
