ATU and ICANN Partnership to Accelerate IPv6 Deployment and Digital Inclusion Across Africa
The grant and dialogue signal a deepening of cooperation between ATU and ICANN, with both parties reaffirming their commitment to expanding internet access, fostering innovation, and ensuring Africa’s full participation in the global digital ecosystem.

The African Telecommunications Union (ATU) continues to take bold steps in advancing internet infrastructure across the continent, as it recently received a strategic grant from the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) to accelerate the deployment of IPv6 in African countries.
To mark this growing partnership, ICANN leadership, led by Pierre Dandjinou, Vice President of Global Stakeholder Engagement for Africa, paid an official visit to the ATU headquarters in Nairobi. The delegation was warmly received by ATU Secretary General, John Omo, who led the secretariat in high-level discussions focused on the future of digital connectivity across Africa.
During the meeting, both organizations explored national and regional opportunities tied to digital inclusion, particularly the critical transition from the older IPv4 internet protocol to the more advanced IPv6. The talks also delved into existing and potential collaborations under the Coalition for Digital Africa, a multi-stakeholder initiative aiming to enhance Africa’s digital infrastructure and governance.
