The initiative offers internet access at highly subsidised rates ranging from P2.00 to P10.00, along with a daily free 45-minute window of unlimited-speed connectivity.

In a major step toward digital inclusion, Botswana Telecommunications Corporation (BTC ) has officially launched a Community Wi-Fi project in Old Naledi, aiming to provide affordable, high-speed internet to one of Gaborone’s most underserved communities.

The launch event was attended by local and national leaders, including Kgosi Motlhatswi Pule, Minister of Communications & Innovation,  Hon. David Tshere, Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, Hon. Nelson Ramaotwana, and BTC Acting CEO Ms. Boitumelo Paya.

The initiative offers internet access at highly subsidised rates ranging from P2.00 to P10.00, along with a daily free 45-minute window of unlimited-speed connectivity. This marks a significant milestone in the government’s ongoing efforts to bridge the digital divide and ensure that communities like Old Naledi are not left behind in Botswana’s digital transformation agenda.

BTC described the project as a “transformational tool” that empowers residents to learn, work, communicate, and access opportunities through the internet. By targeting affordability and accessibility, the Community Wi-Fi network is expected to benefit students, entrepreneurs, job seekers, and families alike.

The rollout in Old Naledi is part of a broader national strategy to foster digital inclusivity, especially in underserved and rural areas. It signals a collaborative effort between traditional leadership, government, and the private sector to build a more connected Botswana.
