The ceremony underscored the government's strong emphasis on ensuring data privacy, positioning certification not merely as a compliance requirement but as a crucial measure to protect sensitive information.

Harare recently hosted the inaugural Data Controller License Certificate Handover Ceremony, marking a significant step forward in Zimbabwe’s commitment to data privacy and digital security. The event celebrated the certification of over 570 data controllers, with participants also hailing from neighboring countries.

The ceremony underscored the government’s strong emphasis on ensuring data privacy, positioning certification not merely as a compliance requirement but as a crucial measure to protect sensitive information. Authorities expressed satisfaction with the proactive response from various organizations, highlighting a collective effort towards strengthening data protection frameworks. The newly certified data controllers were encouraged to be “torchbearers” in their respective workplaces, driving the agenda of enhanced data privacy.

The success of the certification program was attributed to the collaborative efforts of the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) and the Harare Institute of Technology . Their work ensured the course curriculum was robust and met international standards, providing participants with a solid foundation in data protection principles and practices. The organizers expressed a strong desire to see an increasing number of data controllers pursue certification in the future, further solidifying the nation’s data security posture.
