Econet Powers Lesotho’s Digital Leap with Major Network Upgrade
Known for its strong coverage and deep signal reach, this frequency band is key to extending next-generation connectivity into both urban hubs and remote rural areas.

Econet Telecom Lesotho (ETL) is reshaping the digital landscape of the country through an ambitious network upgrade initiative aimed at delivering faster, more reliable connectivity to communities across all ten districts of Lesotho.
At the heart of this transformation is the rapid expansion of ETL’s 5G infrastructure. The company has grown its number of active 5G sites from 54 to 149, powered by the high-performing 700MHz spectrum. Known for its strong coverage and deep signal reach, this frequency band is key to extending next-generation connectivity into both urban hubs and remote rural areas.
Rolling out in phases since February 2025, the network overhaul began in Maseru and is being implemented strategically to maintain uninterrupted service. The project involves replacing legacy systems with high-efficiency radio units and reinforcing the transport network to accommodate rising data demands. Enhanced 5G coverage is already reaching towns like Leribe, Mafeteng, Quthing, and Butha-Buthe, marking a nationwide milestone in digital access.
In addition to physical infrastructure upgrades, ETL is integrating advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems into its network. These technologies are designed to monitor and adjust network performance in real time, helping prevent disruptions and maintain a high standard of service. AI integration also ensures the network evolves in step with user behavior and technological advancements.
This upgrade forms a critical part of Econet’s broader mission to foster digital inclusion and innovation throughout Lesotho. With connectivity becoming essential for sectors like education, healthcare, and commerce, the investment ensures that all regions — regardless of geography — benefit from the digital revolution.
