Safaricom Ethiopia Reaches 10 million 90-Day Active Customers in Just Four Years
Since launching, Safaricom Ethiopia has invested over 300 billion ETB in telecom and digital infrastructure. Its 4G network now reaches 55% of the population, supported by 3,141 live sites across more than 150 towns and cities.

Safaricom Ethiopia has crossed a major milestone, reaching 10 million active customers within a 90-day window—just four years after entering the Ethiopian market. The company announced the achievement on Monday, highlighting its rapid growth, deep local investment, and expanding impact across the country.
According to the telco, this success reflects Ethiopia’s growing demand for reliable and inclusive mobile connectivity, as well as the trust placed in Safaricom by individuals, families, and businesses nationwide.
“Today marks four years since the government liberalised the sector and awarded Safaricom a license to operate. We’ve remained focused on accelerating Ethiopia’s digital transformation by building inclusive, high-quality connectivity that empowers everyone, everywhere, all the time. Today, we are proud—10 million customers across the country is more than just a number. It reflects your trust and support in our shared commitment to building a digital future for our country.”

Since launching, Safaricom Ethiopia has invested over 300 billion ETB in telecom and digital infrastructure. Its 4G network now reaches 55% of the population, supported by 3,141 live sites across more than 150 towns and cities. The company currently serves 7.1 million active mobile data users, with an average monthly data consumption of 6.5GB per user.
Beyond connectivity, Safaricom Ethiopia’s local impact has also been notable. The company has created over 20,000 indirect jobs and built a team of 900 staff—97% of whom are Ethiopian nationals. It has also contributed more than 120 million ETB to support education and emergency relief, and, in collaboration with partners, mobilised 530 million birr to deliver digital training programmes for young Ethiopians.
With this milestone, Safaricom Ethiopia is positioning itself as a long-term player in one of Africa’s most promising telecom markets—where connectivity, inclusion, and digital transformation remain critical pillars for national development.
