MTN MoMo and Sanlam Launch Mobile Insurance Platform to Boost Inclusion in Uganda

At the heart of this initiative is a shared mission to drive financial inclusion through digital innovation.

Insurance in Uganda has become more accessible with the partnership between MTN Mobile Money Uganda (MoMo ) and Sanlam Uganda.  The two companies have unveiled Cover by MoMo, a mobile-based insurance platform designed to simplify access to life and health coverage for everyday Ugandans.

The launch introduced Family Cover by MoMo as the first offering on the platform. Starting from as little as UGX 500 per month, MoMo users can now insure themselves and up to six family members directly from their phones. The service covers both life insurance and hospitalization, offering financial support when it’s needed most—without the burden of paperwork or physical queues.

At the heart of this initiative is a shared mission to drive financial inclusion through digital innovation. MTN MoMo Uganda CEO Richard Yego described the launch as a bold step toward that goal, calling it a solution designed for convenience and reach. Chief Product Officer Jemima Kariuki-Njuguna echoed that sentiment, highlighting the peace of mind such a service can bring to families across the country.

“For too long, insurance has felt out of reach for many. But now, that changes. With Cover by MoMo, all you need is your phone.”

– Hellen Kirungi, Senior Manager for Loans and Savings, MoMo.

The partnership marks another move by MoMo to use technology in addressing real-world challenges—offering protection not just as a product, but as a promise of inclusion and care in the digital age.
