South Africa Moves to Update Digital Content Laws, Calls for Public Comment

The Department of Communications and Digital Technologies (DCDT ) in South Africa has officially invited public comments on its Draft White Paper on Audio and Audiovisual Media Services and Online Safety. This crucial step in policy development was announced by Minister Solly Malatsi, Member of Parliament, in accordance with Section 85 (2) (b) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa Act, 1996.
The Draft White Paper aims to update and modernize South Africa’s regulatory framework for media and digital content, addressing the complexities of the evolving digital landscape, including streaming services, online platforms, and the need for enhanced online safety measures. The Ministry seeks to gather final written comments and inputs from members of the public and interested persons to ensure a comprehensive and inclusive policy.
The public has a period of thirty (30) calendar days from the date of the Notice’s publication in the Government Gazette to submit their feedback. Submissions received after this specified closing date may be disregarded.
