Nigeria Launches Youth-Focused Data Protection Training Initiative
This initiative is designed to equip over 5,000 young Nigerians with digital literacy, data protection, and privacy skills required to thrive as future-ready Data Protection Officers (DPOs).
The Federal Ministry of Youth Development and the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC ) have jointly launched the Data Protection Training Programme for Nigerian Youths, marking a significant step toward empowering young people with essential digital skills.
The initiative, unveiled under the leadership of Hon. Minister of Youth Development, Comrade Ayodele Olawande, and NDPC National Commissioner/CEO, Dr Vincent Olatunji, aims to train over 5,000 young Nigerians in digital literacy, data protection, and privacy—preparing them for roles as future-ready Data Protection Officers (DPOs).
Commending the partnership, Hon. Olawande praised Dr Olatunji for his dedication and reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to equipping youths for the digital economy. He described the programme as a vital tool for youth empowerment and a product of strategic collaboration between the Ministry and the NDPC.
In his remarks, Dr Olatunji traced the roots of the initiative to a Memorandum of Understanding signed between the two institutions and affirmed its alignment with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s eight-point agenda, particularly in job creation and digital empowerment. He highlighted the rising demand for DPOs and urged participants to fully engage with the programme and seize the opportunities within the growing data protection ecosystem.
The launch event was attended by key figures, including the Special Adviser to the President on Policy and Coordination, Mrs Hadiza Bala Usman; Chairman of the House Committee on ICT and Cybersecurity, Hon. Adedeji Stanley; and the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Youth Development, Mr. Olusanya Olubunmi.
