Nigeria Moves Toward Paperless Governance in Digital Transformation Drive

Author: Akim Benamara

The digitization effort forms a central component of the Tinubu administration’s broader plan to modernize public service delivery and position Nigeria as a leader in digital transformation within West Africa.

Professor Adeyanju has highlighted Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to harness artificial intelligence (AI) and digital innovation as crucial to boosting national wealth, enhancing government efficiency, and improving social stability. His remarks are in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes technology as a driver of Nigeria’s economic and societal transformation.

Speaking about ongoing initiatives, Adeyanju explained that Galaxy Backbone , where he plays a key role, is working closely with multiple government agencies, including the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, to digitize core government operations. This transition will see ministries move away from manual filing systems to paperless offices, enabling directors and civil servants to perform their duties seamlessly, even remotely.

“We are ensuring that we move from a manual file system to a paperless office, wherein anywhere you are in the world or within Nigeria, directors are able to do their work, even on the go.”

He emphasized that the shift to digital government services would bring significant benefits, including faster and more affordable service delivery for citizens, improved productivity within ministries, and higher overall efficiency in public service management. Importantly, Adeyanju noted that digitization would also enhance transparency by reducing human interference in administrative processes, which often leads to inefficiencies and corruption.

“Once things are digitalized, there is less of the human factor … from end to end, if it’s digital, then you are sure people will do their work and citizens will get more value.”

The digitization effort forms a central component of the Tinubu administration’s broader plan to modernize public service delivery and position Nigeria as a leader in digital transformation within West Africa. Through AI and innovative technologies, the government aims to improve governance, cut costs, and create an environment that supports economic growth and citizen satisfaction.
