Ghana Takes Major Step Towards Secure Digital Future with New Data Protection Board
The Minister has tasked the board with immediately developing a national data governance framework to support Ghana's digital economy and AI strategies.
Hon. Samuel Nartey George, Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, has officially sworn in the new Governing Board of the Data Protection Commission (DPC). Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony on Wednesday, Minister George highlighted the board’s crucial role in Ghana’s digital transformation.
“Your task is enormous. But I have confidence in your individual and collective expertise. You must help build a future-facing data protection ecosystem that ensures privacy while enabling responsible data use across government and the private sector.”

The newly constituted board is chaired by Ms. Teki Akuetteh, a respected digital rights lawyer with extensive experience in data protection and digital governance.
The other members sworn in include Dr. Arnold Kavaarpuo, Acting Executive Director of the Data Protection Commission (DPC); Mr. Salifu Suleman, representing the National Communications Authority; Dr. Joseph Whittal, Commissioner of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ); and Ing. Dr. Mark Oliver Kevor, Acting Director General of the National Information Technology Agency (NITA).
Additional members are Dr. Zakaria Mumuni, representing the Bank of Ghana; Mr. David Maxwell Bessah of the Ghana Statistical Service; Dr. Adonoo Patrick Lebene; Mr. Sena Kudjawu; and Hon. Alexander Roosevelt Gabby Hottordze, Member of Parliament.
The Minister also noted that three more members will be sworn in at a later date.
Hon. George also revealed plans to upgrade the DPC to a full-fledged authority with enhanced regulatory powers and a nationwide presence. He further tasked the board with supporting the implementation of the forthcoming Data Harmonization Act, which will consolidate national data silos into a secure, centralized data exchange platform.

In her acceptance remarks, Ms. Akuetteh pledged the board’s commitment to the Minister’s vision, saying,
“This is a national duty. We understand the weight of this responsibility and are ready to get to work immediately. Data protection must become a core pillar of Ghana’s digital future.”
