WeThinkCode Partners with South Cape TVET College to Launch Rural Software Engineering Programme
This collaboration is a key part of WeThinkCode_'s strategy to replicate its successful training model beyond major urban centers.
In a landmark effort to bring software engineering education to underserved communities, WeThinkCode_ has launched a new partnership with South Cape TVET College. The initiative, supported by the DG Murray Trust and the Caterpillar Foundation, will provide a rigorous training program for a cohort of 30 students at the Hessequa Campus in Riversdale. This collaboration is a key part of WeThinkCode_’s strategy to replicate its successful training model beyond major urban centers.
“WeThinkCode_ has long been committed to making software engineering education accessible to all, and partnering with South Cape TVET College allows us to refine how we support students in rural settings. This is more than just a standalone programme; it is a scalable blueprint for reaching youth in regions where tech education opportunities are scarce.”
– Ruvimbo Gwatirisa, Director of Public Partnerships, WeThinkCode_
The 18-month curriculum mirrors the high standards of WeThinkCode_’s other programs, with students earning an NQF Level 6 Occupational Certificate in Software Engineering. The training covers foundational software development and advanced specializations in areas like mobile development, cloud computing, and AI. To address the unique challenges of rural students, the partnership ensures on-campus accommodation, making the program more accessible to those from remote and disadvantaged backgrounds.
David Modiba, Deputy Director of DHET TVET Curriculum Development, highlighted the partnership’s role in aligning education with industry needs.
“Our collaboration with WeThinkCode_ represents a transformative step in elevating South Cape TVET College’s curriculum to align with industry demands. By integrating cutting-edge software engineering training into our academic offerings, we’re not only enhancing educational pathways but actively equipping students with the skills needed to secure meaningful employment. This partnership opens doors for disadvantaged youth to access career opportunities that were once beyond reach, ensuring that talent is nurtured, supported, and placed into roles that drive South Africa’s digital future.”
– David Modiba, Deputy Director, DHET TVET
WeThinkCode_ is actively seeking to expand this model by engaging with key stakeholders, including government, industry, and funders. The initiative offers a scalable public-private model for the government, a pipeline of job-ready tech talent for industry partners, and a high-impact investment opportunity for funders.
“Our goal is to build a national network of tech talent that reaches beyond traditional urban centres. By refining our approach at South Cape TVET College, we’re laying the groundwork for future collaborations that will bring software engineering training to more communities across South Africa.”
