Teraco Academy Tackles Tech Skills Gap in South Africa’s Data Centre Industry

This initiative by Teraco, one of Africa’s leading data centre operators, aims to develop a pipeline of capable technicians while also creating employment opportunities, especially for individuals from historically disadvantaged backgrounds.

Launched in 2022, the Teraco Data Centre Academy was established to address a pressing challenge in South Africa’s digital infrastructure landscape—the shortage of skilled technical professionals in the data centre sector. This initiative by Teraco,  one of Africa’s leading data centre operators, aims to develop a pipeline of capable technicians while also creating employment opportunities, especially for individuals from historically disadvantaged backgrounds.

The Academy offers a comprehensive, year-long training programme that blends academic learning with real-world experience. Learners begin with a six-month classroom-based technical training period, followed by six months of practical work experience at Teraco’s operational data centres. To qualify for the programme, participants must hold a minimum N2 qualification in electrical engineering. The training modules include an introduction to data centre operations, electrical systems (such as UPS and generators), HVAC, Occupational Health & Safety, and emergency response procedures. This structure equips learners with both theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience in operating and maintaining mission-critical infrastructure.

Since its inception, the Academy has enrolled 80 learners, all from previously disadvantaged backgrounds. Impressively, 90% of those enrolled have successfully completed the programme. Approximately half of the graduates have gone on to secure employment at Teraco, with the remainder finding roles in the wider data centre and ICT industries. Beyond technical competencies, the Academy also focuses on fostering teamwork, problem-solving, and independent thinking—skills that are essential in dynamic technical environments.

A key feature of the Academy is its commitment to diversity and inclusion. Globally, the data centre industry has been criticised for its gender imbalance. In response, Teraco has prioritised gender diversity, with more than 60% of Academy participants being women. This proactive approach not only helps balance representation but also provides a model for addressing broader equity challenges in the tech sector.

The programme is delivered in three distinct phases. The first involves classroom-based technical instruction delivered by accredited institutions, covering systems such as electrical infrastructure, cooling technologies, and fire suppression. The second phase transitions learners into real-world environments, where they apply their knowledge at Teraco’s data centres while gaining insight into internal processes, health and safety standards, and operational policies. Finally, learners are evaluated for potential permanent employment, having completed a full cycle of academic and practical preparation.

Beyond technical training, the Academy also emphasises workplace readiness and personal development. Participants receive instruction in communication, conflict resolution, presentation skills, and client service. Financial literacy, time management, and personal growth modules further prepare learners for the challenges of professional life. A mentorship component connects learners with industry professionals who offer career guidance, support, and operational insight. This mentorship, along with the organisation-wide visibility of learner profiles, creates a strong sense of inclusion and community within the company.

To ensure the programme remains effective and sustainable, Teraco continuously refines its approach based on feedback and evolving industry needs. Curriculum updates, resource management strategies, and the integration of feedback mechanisms all contribute to the programme’s ongoing improvement. The success of the initiative is measured through practical, clear metrics, making it both scalable and replicable across different regions.

Ultimately, the Teraco Data Centre Academy represents a transformative approach to workforce development. By investing in local talent, promoting inclusion, and equipping learners with critical technical and personal skills, Teraco is not only building capacity for its operations but also contributing to broader economic development and social equity. The Academy stands as a model for how private sector initiatives can drive meaningful, lasting impact in a rapidly evolving digital economy.
