Malawi Launches Phase 2 of ‘Connect A School’ Project to Build 120 New ICT Labs
The meeting, which included headteachers from schools participating in Phase 2, aimed to orient them on their roles and responsibilities in the project.
The Universal Service Fund (USF) and the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) have initiated the second phase of the “Connect A School” (CAS) Project with a key stakeholder meeting held on August 15, 2025, at Sigelege Beach Resort. The meeting, which included headteachers from schools participating in Phase 2, aimed to orient them on their roles and responsibilities in the project.
In a collaborative effort to advance digital literacy and transform the country’s education system, the project brings together crucial partners, including the Ministry of Education, the National Construction Industry Council (NCIC), the Department of Buildings (DoB), and TEVETA.
Phase 2 of the CAS Project will see the construction of 120 new Smart ICT Labs, adding to the 75 labs already established across Malawi in the first phase. This expansion is a significant step towards bridging the digital divide and ensuring equitable access to technology, particularly in underserved regions.
Speaking at the event, Professor Chomora Mikeka, Director of Science, Technology, and Innovation, expressed his satisfaction with the progress of Phase 1 and emphasized the project’s importance in achieving Malawi’s Vision 2063 of universal internet access.
“We are in a digital era, and this initiative will not only equip students with essential digital skills but also empower surrounding communities.”

Ronald Tembo, Head of the USF, also highlighted the project’s role in extending ICT services to remote areas. He stressed that by connecting schools to the internet, Malawi is building a strong foundation for inclusive education, innovation, and comprehensive digital transformation.
