MTN and Digitel to Extend Mobile Money Services Across South Sudan

August 18, 2025
2 min read

The commitment was made during meetings with the Bank of South Sudan's Department of Communication and Public Relations. This initiative is aimed at reducing reliance on cash payments and addressing liquidity shortages.

In a significant move to advance South Sudan’s digital economy, leading mobile money operators, MTN  and Digitel,  have pledged to expand their services across the country. The commitment was made during meetings with the Bank of South Sudan’s Department of Communication and Public Relations. This initiative is aimed at reducing reliance on cash payments and addressing liquidity shortages.

The expansion is a direct response to the government’s push for a more efficient and sustainable digital payment system. De Chan Awuol, the Executive Vice President of Digitel Holdings, affirmed his company’s readiness to promote public awareness about the benefits of digital banking and praised the central bank for its leadership in this area.

Similarly, Harrison Daka, the Senior Manager for Products and Services at MTN’s MoMo, assured the Bank of South Sudan that MTN is committed to broadening its operations to more areas. He encouraged both traders and consumers to adopt mobile money for transactions, a move he believes will help alleviate the country’s cash shortage issues.

The expansion of mobile money services is considered a crucial step toward improving access to financial services for a wider population and is expected to lay a solid foundation for digital transformation in South Sudan.
